Nigella sativa (black caraway, also known as black cumin, nigella, and kalonji) is an annual flowering plant in the family Ranunculaceae, native to south and southwest Asia. The plant grows to 20–30 cm (7.9–11.8 in) tall, with finely divided, linear (but not thread-like) leaves. The flowers are delicate, and usually colored pale blue and white, with five to ten petals. The fruit is a large and inflated capsule composed of three to seven united follicles, each containing numerous seeds which are used as spice, sometimes as a replacement for black cumin (Bunium bulbocastanum).

Culinary uses

The seeds of N. sativa are used as a spice in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. The black seeds taste like a combination of onions, black pepper, and oregano. They have a pungent, bitter taste and smell.

The dry-roasted seeds flavor curries, vegetables, and pulses. They can be used as a "pepper" in recipes with pod fruit, vegetables, salads, and poultry. In some cultures, the black seeds are used to flavor bread products, and are used as part of the spice mixture panch phoron (meaning a mixture of five spices) and alone in many recipes in Bengali cuisine and most recognizably in naan. Nigella is also used in Armenian string cheese, a braided string cheese called majdouleh or majdouli in the Middle East.

History

Archaeological evidence about the earliest cultivation of N. sativa "is still scanty", but N. sativa seeds were found in several sites from ancient Egypt, including Tutankhamun's tomb. Seeds were found in a Hittite flask in Turkey from the second millennium BCE.

   N. sativa may have been used as a condiment of the Old World to flavor food. The Persian physician, Avicenna, in his Canon of Medicine, described N. sativa as a treatment for dyspnea or shortness of breath..

Nutrition Content

   N. sativa oil contains linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, and trans-anethole, and other minor constituents.  Active compounds and aromatics include thymoquinone (TQ), dihydrothymoquinone, Thymohydroquinone (THQ), p-cymene, carvacrol, α-thujene, thymol, α-pinene, β-pinene and t-anethole.

Preliminary studies have investigated claims from traditional medicine that N. sativa has efficacy as a therapy, mainly using the seed oil extract, volatile oil, and isolated constituent thymoquinone (TQ) and Thymohydroquinone (THQ).

Traditionally, the oil has been used to:

Promote Heart Health – The Omega 6 & 9 fatty acids, combined with the phytosterols that black seed oil contains, offer amazing heart benefits and help reinforce elasticity in your blood vessel walls, aiding in the prevention of blood clot formation and arterial pressure. The anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anticoagulant properties of TQ and THQ also help lower your cholesterol and blood sugar aswell.

Fight Fungal Infections – Fungal infections can form a variety of different diseases and rashes. Research shows that fungus and mold cannot survive in an environment with Thymol, Thymoquinone (TQ), and Thymohydroquinone (THQ), the main compounds found in black seeds. These compounds are known for their effective anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that can extensively treat and cure fungal infections.

Reduce Allergies – Many people suffer from seasonal allergies and sinus problems that usually require sedating pills and medications with countless side effects. A study found that topical application and ingestion of black seed oil was effective in the treatment of allergic rhinitis and asthma due to anti-inflammatory and antihistamine response.

Healthy Skin – With all the essential fatty acids, vitamins, antioxidants, and amino acids, black seed oil is a perfect skin moisturizer. Not only is it great for repairing UV damage, stretch marks, scars, eczema, psoriasis, skin cancer. etc., it also has anti-aging properties that help with wrinkles.

Cancer Treatment – The components TQ thymoquinone and THQ thymohydroquinone, found in black seeds, have been found to be effective in the treatment and prevention of cancer. Known mainly for its anti-inflammatory, anti-radiation, and antioxidant properties, topical and internal applications have been found to treat various types of cancers and the side effects of chemotherapy.

Coughs and Asthma – Inflammation in the trachea and bronchi can cause severe discomfort and difficult breathing. The anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory. and antihistamine properties of black seed oil makes it an ideal remedy for asthma and respiratory problems.
Acne – Acne can result from inflammation, bacteria, fungus, and unhealthy eating - causing stress and resulting in break outs. With its powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial/fungal, anti-oxidant, anti-viral, and immunomodulatory properties, black seed oil can clear up your skin giving it a soft, natural glow. It is also known to have been used by Cleopatra for its health and beauty giving qualities. Queen Nefertiti, praised for her exquisite complexion, was an avid user of black cumin seed oil.

Infection–  Not only does black seed oil have strong anti-bacterial properties beneficial for infections, the anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, anti-viral, and immunomodulatory properties help as well.

Sinus infections- Recent investigations on black seed oil have exhibited that it has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-histaminic, antimicrobial, analgesic, and immunomodulator activities. These pharmacological activities make it as suitable candidates for treatment of sinusitis

Fertility – Infertility can have a variety of different causes including smoking tobacco, however, it’s been proven that black seed oil has helped many improve their fertility.

Healthy Hair –   Ironically, most hair products actually cause more damage than repair because they are made with destructive chemicals. The anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects may help treat alopecia. Those properties combined with healthy fatty acids such as omega 3 ,6, and 9, have been shown to improve hair follicle production and strength to speed up restoration and promote general health.

Reduce Flus and Fevers – Since black seed oil is an anti-inflammatory and analgesic substance, you can expect quick relief from fevers and flus upon usage. With immediate aid to your immune system, your body will feel the potent antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, and immunomodulatory properties of black seed oil. A suggested recipe is mixing manuka honey and black seed oil in a cup of tea.

Cure Boils and Carbuncles – Whether it’s a single boil (furuncle) or a cluster of boils (carbuncle), caused by Staphylococcus aureus (staph), black seed oil can clear it up. As long as the boils are smaller than a half inch, black seed oil can help it disappear. This is because boils are caused by bacterial infections which the potent anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and immunomodulatory properties of black seed oil are very strong.

Gastrointestinal Disorders – Gastrointestinal diseases refer to conditions involving the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders include pain, heartburn, dyspepsia, abdominal distension, nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation and diarrhea. Among these, functional and motility disorders are the most common conditions seen in clinical practice and among the general population. The prevalence of these disorders in western countries is about 10-20%. Gastrointestinal diseases are chronic conditions which need long term medication and decrease the quality of life. Commonly used drugs have several side effects like osteoporosis, disturbance in small intestine flora, kidney stones, anemia and increased chance of occurrence of drug-induced diseases such as gastric cancer. Therefore, due to the side effects of conventional medicine, the use of natural products in the treatment of various diseases has been in the center of attention in the last few decades. Black Seed Oil and its main constituent, TQ showed anti-cancer, hepatoprotective, anti-bacterial, anti-schistosomiasis, gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in animal models of gastrointestinal disorders including cancers, hepatotoxicity, ischemia/reperfusion injury, cholestatic liver, non-ulcer dyspepsia, schistosomiasis infection, colitis and panceratitis. These effects supported the preventive and therapeutic effect of N. sativa and its constituents on inflammatory, oxidative and toxic injury due to various toxins, microbes and food allergens. Clinical studies also indicated preventive effect as well as relieving effect of this plant and its constituents on various gastrointestinal disorders. Therefore, Black Seed Oil has both preventive and therapeutic effects on gastrointestinal diseases. A great combination is yogurt and black seed oil.

Reduce High Blood Pressure & Cholesterol–  Known for its potent anticoagulant properties, black seed oil is perfect for controlling hypertension, inflammation, and stress. Studies have shown that many people have noticed a significant drop in their blood pressure levels after taking black seed oil for 8 weeks. Present studies showed that N. sativa caused significant decrease in TC, LDL and TG, and slight increase in HDL

Muscle Spasms and Cramps – The antisconvulsant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties of black seed oil make it very helpful in preventing and easing muscle cramps/spasms. You can either consume it orally or topically for near-instant results.

Psoriasis – Psoriasis is a chronic life-long inflammatory disease that primarily affects the skin, musculoskeletal system, the gastrointestinal system, and the eyes. Being an autoimmune disorder no diagnostic tests available for identification of psoriasis. However, the current treatments have not fully met the needs of the sufferers, largely due to the side effects so often associated with various therapies. Also, a large proportion of patients would develop drug resistance after long term drug exposure. Natural remedies seem promising in the management of wide range of dermatological conditions including psoriasis vulgaris.

Treat Eczema – With more than  3 million US cases per year, Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is easily one of the most common skin disorders . Healthy skin helps retain moisture and protects you from bacteria, irritants and allergens. Eczema is related to a gene variation that affects the skin's ability to provide this protection, which causes your skin to be affected by environmental factors, irritants and allergens. More than half of young children with atopic dermatitis develop asthma and hay fever by age 13. A skin condition called neurodermatitis (lichen simplex chronicus) starts with a patch of itchy skin. You scratch the area, which makes it even itchier. Eventually, you may scratch simply out of habit. This condition can cause the affected skin to become discolored, thick and leathery. Repeated scratching that breaks the skin can cause open sores and cracks. These increase the risk of infection from bacteria and viruses, including the herpes simplex virus. This especially affects people whose work requires that their hands are often wet and exposed to harsh soaps, detergents and disinfectants. Treating eczema with black seed oil is the perfect remedy. Containing generous amounts of essential fatty acids, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and analgesic compounds- your skin is bound to return to its naturally glowing and smooth state.

Aid in Weight Loss – Black seed oil’s weight loss effects stem from its blood sugar lowering properties. On top of being a natural antioxidant, it also aids in speeding up your metabolism and lowering your appetite. This especially helps when trying to gain back control of your diet.

Blood Sugar Diabetes – Systematic review revealed that black seed oil supplementation might be effective in glycemic control in humans.. It’s not only for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, but it’s helpful in improving your overall blood health.

Seizures (Epilepsy) – Despite the availability and use of numerous antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), nearly 15% of childhood epilepsy cases are resistant to treatment. However, in traditional medicine, black seed oil has been known for its anticonvulsant effects. Many researchers have concluded that this was mainly due to the potent effects of thymoquinone found in black seeds.

Efficient MRSA Treatment – Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSRA) has plagued hospitals and treatment centers worldwide due to the fact that staph infections are becoming more and more resistant to generic antibiotics. Caused by a weak immune system, the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and immunomodulatory agents of black seeds make it a great alternative to many of today’s antibiotics. Of all the infections that black seeds are known to help treat, this is probably one of the more important ones.
More problematic for elders (since it involves surgery in some cases), MSRA can be harvest a lot of uncontrollable pain throughout the body. The upside is that studies have shown black seed oil compounds to be an effective way to inhibit the spread and remove MRSA altogether.

Opiate Addiction Treatment – Multiple scientific studies have concluded that the Non opioid drug Nigella sativa is effective in long-term treatment of opioid dependence. It not merely cures the opioid dependence but also cures the infections and weakness from which majority of addicts suffer.

Scars – Whether they are post-surgical or not, black seed oil makes a great remedy for healing scars. It is one of the only few natural herbs that have been proven to remove & heal scars permanently.

Prevent Radiation Damage – Studies show that black seed oil that was used on patients who were exposed to gamma radiation had far less damage than ones who didn’t consume any. The conclusion showed that people who had radiation exposure could treat and prevent damage with black seeds.
A significantly stronger immune system was found on patients who were consuming black seed oil. There are also studies that prove black seeds to be helpful for cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment.

Prevent & Heal Lead Poisoning – Known as one of the most toxic sources worldwide, lead can interfere with a number of your body processes and can cause harm to your brain, heart, intestines, kidneys, nervous system, bones, and even your reproductive system. Research has shown that black seed oil has been effective in protecting and reversing the damage done to the brain due to lead poisoning.

Treat Hemorrhoids (Piles)– A painful congestion rooted problem with few treatments available, hemorrhoids can be painful to experience especially when considering the side effects of most of today’s’ hemorrhoids prescription medication. Black seeds, on the other hand, offer immediate relief with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. (topically quicker than ingesting)

Relieve Headaches and Migraines – The global reported percentage of headache prevalence is 47% and it is the fifth most common primary complaint of patients in the USA. Overall, 96% of people experience headache in their whole life and also the prevalence in females is higher than in males.. For centuries, Arabs and Europeans have used it by applying it around their eyes, nose, and forehead which gave quick relief.

Boost Immunity- You can also use black seeds to improve your overall immune system since it is an immunomodulator, thereby improving your body’s defense mechanism and protection to bacteria.

Brain Health (Dementia Alzheimer's & Memory)- Research has shown that black seed consumption enhances your memory, cognition, and attention. It’s recently been proven to increase sharpness and even improve your ability to remember both short and long-term.  It should be mentioned that TQ (active ingredient in black seed oil) is seen to be the most useful known element of NS and can be regarded as a useful agent in the treatment of diseases of the nervous system. The results of several studies have shown that this plant can  improve memory impairment, anxiety, depression, epilepsy, neurotoxicity, neurodegeneration and pain.

Oral Health- Particularly Gingivitis, black seed oil is one of nature’s most potent natural remedies for suppressing and healing gum infections. The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties found in it have proven to clear the gums from bacteria and provide immediate pain relief. (oil pulling with it is most effective)

Menopause- Black seed oil is used in the treatment of postmenopausal symptoms and is plausible to be an alternative to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for post menopause in human.

Testosterone- Black seed oil significantly increased sperm count and daily sperm production especially in higher doses without significant changes in the sperm motility and viability. Nigella sativa seeds caused a positive effect on some fertility parameters and pituitary-testicular hormone axis in especially higher dose.

Alleviates Arthritis – Black seed oil has proven in numerous studies to be highly effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory related ailments. Once again this is due to the powerful anti-inflammatory properties of black seed oil which make it such a potent natural remedy.

Pain Killer- In many cases, black seed oil can substitute some of today’s most common painkillers. The anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties it contains make it ideal for treating pain.

Relieves Stress- Black seed oil has been proven to be effective in reducing stress levels, as well as many other cognitive benefits. The studies showed that when the oil was taken, subjects had significantly lower stress levels than the those without it.  It should be mentioned that TQ is seen to be the most useful known element of black seed oil and can be regarded as a useful agent in the treatment of diseases of the nervous system. The results of several studies have shown that this plant can improve anxiety.

Depression-
The results of several studies have shown that this plant can improve depression, and pain. The antidepressant–like effect of the black seed oil is attributed to the presence of flavonoid and triterpene phytoconstituents. It was reported that triterpenoids exert antidepressant–like effect by inhibiting the uptake of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. Meanwhile, flavonoids elicit the antidepressant–like effect through antioxidant protection

Meningitis- Anaerobic bacteria can cause serious infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, for example, elderly, diabetics, and those suffering from HIV infection and using anticancer chemotherapy, immune suppressant drugs, or broad spectrum antibiotics. Anaerobes have been reported to cause aspiration pneumonia, lung abscess, and emphysema. Moreover, they have been shown to cause brain abscess and bacterial meningitis. They are generally resistant to many antibacterial drugs and are known to develop biofilm around them. However black seed oil and its constituents have been shown to have potent anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, amoebicidal,  anti-fungal, and immunomodulatory properties.

Promotes Kidney Health – Black seed oil and its main component, thymoquinone showed positive effects in prevention or curing kidney stones and renal failure through various mechanism such as antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-eicosanoid and immunomodulatory effects.
.
Promotes Bone Repair and Developement- Research has shown black seed extract to increase the bone marrow cells’ growth rate by an astonishing 150%. This is according to numerous studies conducted on multiple people. Studies have shown that black seed may be used for the treatment of diabetes-induced osteoporosis and for the promotion of fracture healing.

Treats HIV– According to recent studies, black seed oil has proven to be extremely effective in the treatment of HIV.  In some cases, it only took 6 months for the HIV strain to be completely wiped out the bloodstream. On top of that, it stayed gone too.

Fatigue– Black seed oil has been efficient in the treatment of chronic fatigue. Although the causes for it vary, researchers concluded that black seed extract is helpful for re-energizing the body.

Prevents Anemia– Many of us are at risk of sickle cell and anemia due to various genetic and environmental factors. Once again, black seeds have been known to prevent and treat anemia, removing it completely in many cases and studies.

Protects Brain Damage from Parkinson’s Disease – The thymoquinone (THQ) found in black seed oil  has been proven to protect neurons in our brain against neurotoxicity.

Promotes Liver Health – Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of N. sativa are the main features of preventing and protecting liver from injury. Several studies have shown the protective effects of black seed oil against liver injury produced by ROS with its free radical scavenger properties and enhance antioxidant defenses in body.. Also, none of the studies reported that the use of thymoquinone in moderate doses had significant side effects. The efficacy of N. sativa to postpone progression in chronic liver diseases should be considered as preventive medicine in patients with hepatic disorders.

Hey Gina, I saw your comment about Dr. Onokun medication concerning Fibroid sometime ago and you were right, I tried it and it worked like magic for me. It was like hell living with FIBROID all this years until now, no more pains, bleeding and no miscarriage and I would've come with my testimony before now but I have to wait for a couple of months to see if it will regrow again but there's still no sign of fibroid, I also went to the hospital for test and still i was tested negative. All thanks to Dr. onokun  and to you too Gina. And for anyone out there who wish to try can reach the doctor through  Email: Dronokunherbalcure@gmail.com or WhatsApp +2349064844957
